IMG_148718 July 2016 – In its commitment to the environment and in honour of Mandela Day, Maxiflex staff volunteers will descend on the grounds of the Khula Sizwe Primary School in Tembisa, Gauteng, ready to get digging and planting.

Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact.

The team building event, facilitated by Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), will enable the volunteers to spend their #67 minutes giving back to the community as well as learning permaculture methods of gardening. With over 1000 learners, this food garden materially assists in the nutritional programme run by the school, contributing to food security and sustainability.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela

“We believe that the future of our country lies in the youth and that education is the key to building a great nation.  In addition to our partnership with FTFA for Mandela Day, we run an Education Fund for our employees, enabling a better foundation and greater possibilities.  The Maxiflex family is honoured to give back to our community and show our commitment to the future of a great country.” –   Bram Janssen, MD of Maxiflex Door Systems

Khula Sizwe is no stranger to the programmes implemented by FTFA. In 2015, during a tree planting event, the school was also assessed to ascertain the viability of a food garden. They were so excited at the prospect, that as soon as funding became available, the school was contacted and an implementation date was set. Since then, the garden has grown from strength to strength, and has become a heart-warming success story. With funding such as the Maxiflex intervention, long term sustainability can be achieved.

According to Statistics SA, there are 463 000 people living in Tembisa, an area known for its high crime and low employment. Food security therefore, is one of the most empowering skills for a community to learn. Learners who work in the garden are able to start their own home food gardens and feed their families and neighbours. The garden is one of the most accessible examples of how a group of committed individuals can create radical changes in their lives, and the lives of others – and that is exactly what Mandela Day is all about.
